Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges I faced was forming friendships. This tends to be one of the most fearful elements of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be among your greatest concerns. On the inaugural day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself. Today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever experienced, here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I grasp? It’s wise to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also recognized that if you can be one thing, be true to yourself. Given the diverse personalities at the course and university, you’re sure to encounter like-minded individuals.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was notably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may witness others studying and feel inferior. Several factors aided me in navigating that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar trials. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are in the same predicament. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in the first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for support!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking risks earlier – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to get to know the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has illustrated to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated with the support resources offered by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to enjoy my experience amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
