Ten months back, in October 2022, I was apprehensive, frightened, and unclear about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Jumping into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was familiar with. Reflecting now, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided me, and what is my current standing?
One of the initial and most daunting challenges I encountered was building friendships. This certainly ranks as one of the more intimidating elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it might be one of your principal concerns. On my first day of settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room because I felt too daunted to step out and greet others. Sitting here now, however, I can assertively claim that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve created a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversations with peers facing similar situations. So, what did I discover? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fear not! Numerous ice-breaker events and opportunities will arise to facilitate your interaction with others. I also realized that if you can embody one quality, let it be authenticity. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to uncover others who resonate with you.
Another obstacle I had to surmount was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; it’s possible to observe others studying and feel inadequate. There were a few factors that helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find something confusing, I can almost assure you that there are at least a handful of others who are likewise puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Request help from both your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and they understand that students face difficulties. They show compassion towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned the importance of taking leaps – I indeed took one at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the staff, which is an incredibly beneficial endeavor. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for your well-being! My primary takeaway from this specific aspect of university life is to make the most of the support being offered to you. There’s never too much help!
In a broader sense, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both in the lead-up to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be alleviated with the abundant support options provided by staff and fellow students. It’s revealed to me that I’m never solitary, and it’s taught me how to find joy amidst stressors like examinations and deadlines.
