Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize an academic year packed with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting aspects of entering university, and if you’re reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your main worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day confined in my room, feeling too intimidated to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly say that I have forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what lesson did I learn? I realized that it’s always beneficial to take a plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker events and occurrences to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if there’s one thing you can be, it’s your authentic self. With so many diverse individuals in the course and university, you’re bound to find like-minded people.

Another hurdle I faced was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment isn’t always good for your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel as though you’re not measuring up. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges as you. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can nearly assure you that others share your confusion. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your peers and faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and realize that students face challenges. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our difficulties. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, yet I wish I had sooner. I mentioned taking leaps at the outset; I did take one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are various ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it is genuinely one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the assistance being offered. You can never have too much help!

In a broader context, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always unfounded and can be mitigated by the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone, and it has taught me how to enjoy life even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
