Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with nerves, fear, and uncertainty concerning the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Embracing the unknown was not something my formerly timid and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on this time, I recognize an academic year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons have I gathered from this year, and where do I stand presently?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re viewing this as a potential student, it may be one of your greatest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to term initiation, I spent the whole day concealed in my room because I was too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this course. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversation with those in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s always wise to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and events to help you connect with others. I also learned that if you can embody one quality, be authentic. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you are bound to find others who resonate with you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an atmosphere isn’t always conducive to confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same experience. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that there are others who also don’t comprehend it. So, seek assistance. This may be the single most crucial lesson to adopt in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask your peers and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our difficulties. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I ventured at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the most advantageous actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this component of university is to fully utilize the assistance being offered. You can never receive too much support!

In a broader sense, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both in the lead-up to and during university, are usually unfounded and can be mitigated by the plethora of support options accessible from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never solitary, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
