Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Taking such a significant step was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize it has been a journey of personal development, challenges, and immense enjoyment! But what have I learned this year, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most overwhelming challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as a future student, it might be one of your main concerns. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just a few days ahead of term beginning, I spent the whole day secluded in my room as I felt too intimidated to go out and introduce myself to others. Nevertheless, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it required was engaging in casual conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I found that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if you can embody one quality, be authentic. There are countless diverse individuals across the program and university; you are sure to find people who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I had to surmount was managing the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undeniably a progression from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always supportive of your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors helped me overcome that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also don’t. Thus, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to embrace in your first year. Ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had engaged sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking chances – I did take one at the year’s onset by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to get acquainted with the faculty members, which is an incredibly valuable opportunity. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s certainly one of the most beneficial things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this particular aspect of university is to seize the support you’re being offered. You can never have an excess of assistance!

Overall, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are almost always baseless and can be mitigated by the multitude of support options available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to enjoy myself while managing stressors like exams and deadlines.
