Authored by Dawson La, MEng in Materials Science and Engineering

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I can recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyable moments. But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the first and most overwhelming hurdles was forming friendships. This can be quite daunting when entering university, and if you are a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my dormitory, prior to the term commencing, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too intimidated to socialize. Now, I can proudly state that I have made some wonderful friends here at the university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with those who shared similar experiences. So, what did I take away from this? It’s advisable to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to assist you in bonding with others. Additionally, be yourself. With such a wide range of individuals at the university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the amount of work and the complexity of the material. There was a significant leap from A-levels, and an even greater one from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can impact your self-esteem; you may feel less capable compared to your peers. Keep in mind, everyone is experiencing the same situation. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are puzzled too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is perhaps the most vital lesson from the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They keep us informed throughout the year regarding our issues. I only utilized the pastoral support at the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I took a bold step at the start of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position allowed me to connect with faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it is one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson is to make use of the support available. You can never have too much assistance!

This year has shown me that anxieties about university are often baseless and can be alleviated with the support provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite the pressure from examinations and deadlines.
