Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly shy and introverted self was equipped for. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and what is my current state?

One of the most significant and intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This clearly stands out as one of the more daunting elements of beginning university, and if you are a prospective student reading this, it might be one of your foremost worries. On my first day moving into my dorm, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day cooped up in my room, paralyzed by the fear of stepping out to meet others. However, sitting here today, I can proudly say that I have forged some of the finest friendships I have ever had here at this university and in this program. I discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it required was a bit of casual conversation with individuals in similar positions. So, what did I glean? I realized that it’s always advantageous to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to facilitate connections with others. I also came to understand that above all else, you should be yourself. With a diverse array of individuals across the program and campus, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was indeed a significant jump from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even more pronounced leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes be a blow to your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you find something hard to grasp, I can almost assure you that there are others who feel just as lost. Thus, seek assistance. This could be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Don’t hesitate to ask your classmates or the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are incredible. They are genuinely invested in your success and are aware of the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain an open line of communication regarding our issues. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I regret not doing so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps earlier – I indeed took one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to develop relationships with faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the most advantageous steps you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university is to make the most of the support available. There is no such thing as too much assistance!

In summary, this year has illuminated the fact that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be mitigated by the support avenues available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and demonstrated how to enjoy myself even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
