Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a newcomer. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year of personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights did I gain, and what is my current situation?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most intimidating aspects of commencing university, and for prospective students, it could be a significant worry. On my first day of settling into residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, daunted by the prospect of going out to meet others. Today, I can proudly state I’ve forged some of the best friendships ever, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away? I learned that it’s advantageous to take risks at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There are numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that being true to yourself is essential. With such a diverse mix of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to encounter like-minded people.

An additional hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the content. There was unquestionably a significant increase from A-levels, and in many ways, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can challenge your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. What helped me navigate this was the realization that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you others are in the same situation. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face challenges. They show understanding and maintain regular communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I referenced taking chances previously – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to engage with staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with the staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the available support. You can never receive too much help!

In summary, this year has illustrated to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university life, are often baseless and can be alleviated by the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and taught me how to have fun despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
