Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year rich with personal development, challenges, and abundant enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting facets of commencing university, and for those of you considering it, this might be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the semester starting, I spend the whole day in my room, too fearful to step outside and meet others. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the most remarkable friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, which began with casual conversations with others in the same predicament. So, what has been my takeaway? I’ve realized that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year always pays off. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and activities designed to help you engage with others. I’ve also recognized that being true to yourself is essential. With a diverse array of people across the course and university, you’re likely to encounter individuals who resonate with your mindset.
Another hurdle was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and an even bigger transition from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be testing for your confidence; you might observe others studying and begin to feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me during those times, one being the realization that everyone shares similar experiences. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be one of the most crucial lessons to take away from the first year. Reach out to fellow students and faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are genuinely invested in your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They are sympathetic to student concerns and maintain ongoing dialogue about our difficulties. I did not fully take advantage of the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had tapped into it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary message is to utilize the available support. You can never have too much assistance!
Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be eased through the support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to derive joy even amid pressures like exams and deadlines.
