Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back over the past academic year, I recognize a journey marked by personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This often ranks among the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you’re perusing this as a potential student, it might be one of your primary worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the whole day concealing myself in my room because I was too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and within this course. I’ve formed a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with some casual conversations with fellow students facing similar circumstances. So, what have I learned? I’ve discovered that it is always beneficial to take a leap at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to aid in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one attribute, it should be authenticity. There’s a diverse mix of individuals throughout the course and university; you’re sure to encounter people who resonate with you.

An additional challenge was the workload and the difficulty of the content. There was undoubtedly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always easy on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone else is in the same situation as you. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that there are at least a few others who also find it puzzling. Therefore, seek help. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out for assistance from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students confront challenges. They sympathize with students and maintain continuous communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I did take one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role provided me with the chance to connect with the staff members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to become acquainted with faculty, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to seize the opportunity of the assistance offered. You can never have an excess of support!

Generally speaking, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both leading up to and during university, are nearly always ungrounded and can be mitigated by the numerous support options provided by staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never isolated, and it has taught me to enjoy myself amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
