Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly timid self was used to. Reflecting on the year, I recognize it as a time filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect of starting university can often be the most frightening, and for prospective students, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, right before the term began, I spent the entire day in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet others. Now, I can firmly say that I’ve made some wonderful friends during my time at university and in my course. I discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what did I learn? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that being authentic is vital. With such a diverse group of people throughout the course and university, you are likely to encounter others who share your mindset.
Another challenge I faced was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being in such a setting can undermine your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. What assisted me was the reminder that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Seek support from peers and faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and comprehend the challenges faced by students. They are empathetic and maintain ongoing communication with us all year round. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps before – I took one by becoming a year well-being rep. This position enabled me to forge connections with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with the staff, and it’s one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to fully utilize the assistance provided. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has illuminated for me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated through the support accessible from staff and fellow students. It has revealed that I am never isolated and has taught me how to find enjoyment even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
