By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment. But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand today?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is often a significant worry for new university students. On my first day moving into my accommodation, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too shy to introduce myself to others. Now, I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the best friendships here at the university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with light conversation with others in the same situation. The takeaway? Take that first step at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, no worries! There will be numerous ice-breaker events to facilitate connections with others. Be authentic, and you’ll encounter like-minded individuals.

Another hurdle was managing the workload and the challenging material. The shift from A-levels was substantial, and the leap from the first to the second term was even greater. This environment can test your confidence; you might feel less capable compared to your peers. Remember, everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling with something, others likely are too. So, don’t hesitate to seek help. This is vital during your first year. Reach out to fellow students and staff!

The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely care about your success and understand the struggles students face. They consistently communicate about our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t take advantage of pastoral support until later on, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a chance by becoming a year well-being representative, which helped me engage with staff and provided an enriching experience. There are numerous opportunities to connect with staff, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for yourself. Make sure to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

This year has illustrated to me that anxious feelings regarding university are frequently baseless and can be eased by the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never truly alone and has taught me how to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
