Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt apprehensive and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar wasn’t what my previously timid self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forming friendships. This can be one of the most frightening parts of beginning university, and if you’re a future student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before classes started, I spent the whole day in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Today, I can assertively say that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I take away from this? It’s optimal to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaker events will be available to assist you in connecting with others. Moreover, if you can embody one trait, be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals within the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded peers.
Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. What assisted me was recalling that everyone is experiencing the same circumstances. If you don’t grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you others don’t either. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Look for help from classmates and staff!
This brings me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely want you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year concerning our issues. I did not fully leverage the pastoral support until the conclusion of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I referred to taking chances before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have an excess!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased by the support offered by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I am never alone and taught me how to relish the experience despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
