Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead as I prepared to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Immersing myself in the unfamiliar was not something my formerly shy and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting facets of initiating university life, and if you’re a potential student, it could be a major worry for you. On my first day in my residence, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and socialize. However, I can now assertively state that I’ve developed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar positions. So, what did I discover? I came to realize that taking chances at the outset of the year is always rewarding. If you’re not quite prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker chances and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned the importance of being authentically yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you are sure to meet those who resonate with you.

Another hurdle was coping with the substantial workload and the complexity of the content. There was a clear elevation from A-levels, and an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being in such a setting can be challenging for your self-esteem; seeing others study might make you feel inadequate. What aided me was reminding myself that everyone is in a similar situation. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others are facing the same challenges. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most pivotal lesson to absorb during the initial year. Reach out for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and are keenly aware of the obstacles students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the academic year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your personal development! My main takeaway from this aspect of university is to fully utilize the support available. You can never have an excess of it!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the myriad of support resources provided by faculty and fellow peers. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
