Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current position?

One of the initial and most formidable challenges was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re reading this as an aspiring student, it may be one of your primary worries. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before the semester commenced, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Sitting here now, I can assertively state that I’ve cultivated some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated with some casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I acquire from this experience? I learned that it’s always advantageous to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breakers and events designed to help you engage with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. With such a wide array of individuals across the program and campus, you’re certain to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in many ways, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment isn’t always a confidence booster; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If something puzzles you, I can nearly assure you that there are others who share the same confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the single most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and your instructors!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and acknowledge that students encounter challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain open communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking chances at the start; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the support that is available. You can never have too much!

On a broader note, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be mitigated by the plethora of support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has illustrated how to find enjoyment even amid stressors like exams and deadlines.
