Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I found myself feeling anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead as I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back on the last academic year, I can see a path filled with personal growth, obstacles, and much enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and for those of you considering it, it might be among your primary concerns. On my initial day of moving into my housing, a few days ahead of the semester, I spent the whole day confined to my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve created some of the finest friendships I’ve had at this university and within this program. I have established a second family here at Imperial, all beginning with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What did I take away from this? I realized that it’s always best to take a chance at the start of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaker activities and events to help you bond with others. I also learned that if there is one thing you should be, it’s yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are certain to meet people who resonate with you.

Another challenge involved handling the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a step up from A-levels, and in many ways, an even more significant transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a setting can test your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone shares the same struggles. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly guarantee others feel the same way. Therefore, seek assistance. This may be the crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Turn to your fellow students and the faculty for support!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The educators in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely care about your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and engage in ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by serving as a wellbeing representative for my year. This role provided me with the chance to connect with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are countless ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and this is undoubtedly one of the most advantageous things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance available to you. There’s no such thing as too much support!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated by the various support systems in place from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite the pressures of exams and deadlines.
