Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, frightened, and unsure about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the deep end was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting back, I can see a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your foremost concerns. On my inaugural day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room as I felt too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, sitting here today, I can affirmatively state that I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with making small talk with individuals in similar situations. So, what did I gain from this experience? I discovered that it’s always advantageous to take a leap at the year’s onset. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you connect with others. I also recognized that if you can embody one thing, it should be your true self. There are numerous diverse individuals throughout the course and university; you’re certain to encounter people like yourself.

Another challenge I had to navigate was the workload and complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a transition from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is navigating similar waters. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can almost guarantee others are as well. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are phenomenal. They genuinely want you to succeed and acknowledge that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly leverage the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps at the beginning; I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to connect with staff, and it’s unquestionably one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the assistance you’re provided. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has imparted the understanding that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated through the plethora of support options available from staff and other students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
