Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my formerly timid self was used to. Reflecting back, I realize it has been a year rich in personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most formidable challenges was cultivating friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting aspects of commencing university, and it might be a significant worry for prospective students. On my first day moving into my university housing, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too intimidated to step out and socialize. Today, I can proudly state that I have made some incredible friends here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. What did I take away from this? It’s best to take an initiative at the beginning of the year. If you’re feeling unprepared, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities designed to help you engage with others. Moreover, be genuine. With such a diverse community at the university, you’re sure to come across like-minded individuals.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the subject matter. There was a stark transition from A-levels, and an even more significant leap from the first term to the next. Being in such an environment can adversely affect your confidence; you might observe your peers studying and feel less than adequate. What eased my concerns was the realization that everyone is in the same situation. If something is unclear, there are probably others who share that confusion. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most essential lesson I learned during my first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials is exceptional. They are dedicated to your success and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain ongoing communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking initiatives – I made one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to build connections with the staff, which has been invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and this is among the best things you can do for yourself! My primary message is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

Ultimately, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety about university are often misplaced and can be eased by the support from both staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy even amidst pressures like exams and due dates.
