Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was set to begin my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I find myself now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of starting university, and if you are reading this as a potential student, it may be one of your top worries. On the day I moved into my accommodation, a few days before classes started, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too anxious to step out and introduce myself to peers. However, I can now assert that I have forged some of the finest friendships I have ever experienced here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it merely required engaging in light conversation with individuals in similar predicaments. So, what have I learned? I discovered that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! Numerous ice-breakers and activities will assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can embody one principle, it should be to be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and university, you’re destined to encounter people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was certainly a noticeable elevation from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater shift from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can test your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel insufficient. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone shares the same struggle. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that there are others who don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to absorb in the first year. Look for support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t truly make use of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned previously about taking leaps – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to connect with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this part of university is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much support!

Overall, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated with the multitude of support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated, and it has shown me how to have fun despite stressors like exams and deadlines.
