Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was anxious, frightened, and uncertain about the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was familiar with. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it has been a time filled with personal growth, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights has this year provided, and where do I stand now?

One of the initial and most daunting challenges was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating elements of embracing university life, and if you’re a prospective student reading this, it may well be one of your primary concerns. On the day I moved into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to venture out and greet anyone. However, sitting here today, I can say with assurance that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had, here at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with initiating casual conversations with peers in similar circumstances. So, what was the takeaway? I learned that it’s beneficial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel completely ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events to help you connect with others. Additionally, I discovered that if you can be anything, be genuine. With a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you are sure to encounter like-minded people.

Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a leap from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be tough on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several things helped me navigate that feeling, one being the realization that everyone shares your struggles. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost guarantee at least a few others don’t understand it either. So, seek assistance. This may be the most crucial skill to acquire during the first year. Don’t hesitate to seek help from your classmates and instructors!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They empathize with us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I previously mentioned taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available to you. You can never have an excess of support!

In a broader sense, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are largely unfounded and can be mitigated by the extensive support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
