Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, ten months ago, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was ahead. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Embarking on this new journey was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current standing?

A prominent and intimidating challenge was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more frightening aspects of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be what you’re most apprehensive about. On my first day of moving into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too shy to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can proudly assert that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all initiated with casual conversations with people facing similar situations. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that it’s best to take the plunge at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking occasions and events to facilitate your interaction with others. I also learned that if you can choose to be anything, just be yourself. With such a diverse group of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find like-minded people.

Another hurdle was the intensity of the workload and complexity of the material. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me cope with that sensation, one being the awareness that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something doesn’t make sense to you, I can almost assure you that others are also puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to grasp during your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and instructors!

This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and maintain ongoing dialogue with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks at the beginning; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with instructors, and it’s certainly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the support provided to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are typically unfounded and can be alleviated through the various support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to have fun while managing stressors such as exams and deadlines.
