Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension and uncertainty regarding the journey ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my Materials Science and Engineering degree as a freshman. Immersing myself in unfamiliar territory was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I perceive a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?
One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forging friendships. This often ranks as one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it might be a significant worry. On the day I moved into my residence, a few days before classes commenced, I spent the entire day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what have I discovered? I realized it’s beneficial to take a leap at the start of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that being authentic is essential. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and campus, you’re bound to encounter like-minded peers.
Another obstacle was the volume of work and complexity of content. There was a marked transition from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was recalling that everyone shares the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp something, there are likely others who are too. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out to classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next point. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are attuned to the challenges students encounter. They sympathize with us and maintain ongoing communication about our issues. I didn’t take advantage of pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke of taking leaps – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the finest decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this is to seize the help available. You can never have an excess of support!
All in all, this year has shown me that anxious feelings regarding university are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated with the assistance available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find enjoyment despite pressures like exams and deadlines.
