Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt uneasy and uncertain about what awaited me. I was on the brink of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, hurdles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?
One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most frightening parts of commencing university, and if you’re an incoming student, it could be a major worry for you. On the inaugural day of my accommodation move, just days before classes commenced, I stayed in my room all day, too apprehensive to venture out and interact with others. However, I can now confidently state that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever experienced here at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all of which began with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what insights did I gain? I learned that taking a courageous step at the start of the year is always rewarding. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaking opportunities and activities to help you engage with others. I also discovered that if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. Among the diverse individuals in the course and university, you’re certain to connect with those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was managing the workload and the complexity of content. There was a clear transition from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more considerable leap from the first term to the second. Existing in such an environment can affect your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few elements assisted me through that sentiment, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others do as well. So, seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to take from the first year. Reach out to your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They are genuinely interested in your success and are aware that students face challenges. They show understanding towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until late in the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I spoke about taking leaps – I did take one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. Numerous opportunities exist to familiarize yourself with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this university aspect is to seize the assistance available. You can never have an excess of support!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be eased with the help available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst pressures like exams and deadlines.
