Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of embarking on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and a great deal of fun! But what have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is often one of the most nerve-wracking elements of beginning university, and if you’re a prospective student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entire day in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet new people. Now, I can proudly declare that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it commenced with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. What have I taken away from this? It’s crucial to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking events to assist you in connecting with others. Additionally, if you can embody one thing, be true to yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals in the course and at university, you’ll surely find those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the intensity and complexity of the workload. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and even more transition from the first to the second term. Being in such an atmosphere can shake your confidence; you might see peers studying and feel less capable. A few factors helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you others aren’t grasping it either. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson of the first year. Reach out for help from classmates and faculty!
This brings me to my next observation. The instructors in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and fully grasp the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain ongoing communication with us about our concerns. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until the close of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with faculty, and it’s among the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway is to leverage the support provided. You can never have too much!
In summary, this year has revealed to me that anxieties regarding university are often baseless and can be eased by the support available from faculty and fellow students. It showed me that I am never truly alone and how to enjoy life amid the pressures of exams and deadlines.
