Ten months earlier, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in such a new experience wasn’t typical for my previously timid and reserved nature. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize an academic journey abundant in personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most anxiety-inducing challenges I encountered was making friends. This is undoubtedly one of the more intimidating elements of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it might be one of your largest concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days before lectures commenced, I spent the whole day tucked away in my room as I felt too anxious to step out and greet others. However, here I sit today, able to assert that I’ve formed some of the most wonderful friendships I’ve ever had, right here at this university and in this program. I’ve established a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with those in similar circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I realized that it’s always better to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel a bit unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking and events that facilitate interaction with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, just be yourself. There is a diverse array of individuals across the program and the university; you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.

Another obstacle I had to navigate was the workload and the complexity of the content. The transition from A-levels was significant, and in some respects, the leap from the first to the second term was even greater. Being placed in such an environment isn’t always beneficial for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me overcome that sensation, one being the realization that everyone shares similar feelings. If you’re struggling with a topic, I can almost assure you that several others are too. So, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for help from your fellow students and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and understand that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support available until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so much sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking risks – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with the staff, and it’s definitely one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this particular aspect of university life is to make the most of the assistance being offered to you. There’s no such thing as too much assistance!

Overall, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently irrational and can be alleviated by the multitude of support options offered by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone, and it has shown me how to have fun even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
