Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights has this year granted me, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting aspects of commencing university, and if you are a prospective student, it may be a concern for you as well. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes starting, I spent the whole day secluded in my room because I felt too nervous to go out and introduce myself. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say that I’ve made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in casual conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what was my takeaway? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always the best approach. If you don’t feel prepared or comfortable, there’s no need to stress! There will be numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody anything, be your genuine self. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find people who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the academic demands and the complexity of the material. There was certainly a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into this kind of environment can test your self-assurance; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me overcome this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you there are others who don’t either. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for help!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and acknowledge that students encounter difficulties. They connect with students and maintain regular communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the start of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the staff members, which holds immense value. There are plenty of avenues to familiarize yourself with the faculty, and it’s certainly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My main takeaway from this facet of university is to capitalize on the assistance you’re provided. You can never seek too much help!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are frequently baseless and can be eased with the support resources available from staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has shown me how to relish my experiences alongside stressors like exams and deadlines.
