Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what the future might bring. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my once timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself at this point?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as an aspiring student, it could be one of your main worries. On my initial day of moving into my accommodation, just days before the term commenced, I spent the entire day locked away in my room, too scared to venture out and meet others. Sitting here today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be an abundance of ice-breaking opportunities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also learned that if there’s anything you can be, be yourself. With so many diverse individuals across the program and university, you’re sure to encounter those who connect with you.

Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a significant increase from A-levels, and in some aspects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being thrown into such an atmosphere can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies helped me navigate this experience, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost guarantee there are others who do as well. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most critical lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain consistent communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the support services until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so sooner. I previously mentioned taking leaps—one I took at the onset of the year was becoming a year wellbeing representative. This position allowed me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it is one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this university aspect is to make the most of the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has taught me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be alleviated with the various support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment despite stressors such as exams and deadlines.
