Ten months back, in October 2022, I was filled with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the brink of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year packed with personal development, obstacles, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and what is my current status?
One of the foremost and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting facets of embarking on university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be among your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Yet, as I sit here today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever experienced at this university and within this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with light conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I learn? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be a wealth of ice-breaking chances and activities to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can embody anything, be authentic. With such a diverse range of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re bound to encounter those who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting does not always bolster your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel insufficient. Several things aided me in navigating that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If something puzzles you, I can nearly assure you that others also find it perplexing. So, seek assistance. This might be the single most critical lesson to grasp in the first year. Ask for support from your colleagues and the personnel!
This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire your success and comprehend that students face difficulties. They connect with students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t really take advantage of the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks at the outset; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous opportunities to engage with staff, and it’s certainly one of the best choices you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university is to seize the support offered to you. You can never have too much help!
In general, this year has enlightened me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always baseless and can be alleviated through the numerous support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
