Ten months ago, in October 2022, I felt nervous and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was set to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Looking back now, I can see a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is typically one of the most daunting elements of starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be among your greatest concerns. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, too anxious to go out and socialize. Fast forward to today, I can assertively say that I’ve forged some of the closest friendships I’ve ever had during my time at university and in my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in comparable situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you’re feeling unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! There will be lots of ice-breaker activities to assist you in meeting others. I also realized that authenticity is essential. With such a diverse group of individuals in the program and university, you’re sure to find those who connect with you.

Another challenge was coping with the academic workload and the complexity of the content. There was certainly an increase compared to A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can put a strain on your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. Several strategies helped me navigate this, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same boat. If something isn’t clear to you, I can almost assure you others feel the same way. So, reach out for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek support from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show empathy towards us and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This opportunity enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to leverage the support available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and throughout university, are often baseless and can be eased through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and taught me how to enjoy my time even amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
