By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with nerves, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of beginning my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was far from what my once shy and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year of personal development, challenges, and a lot of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand now?
A significant initial challenge was forging friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting elements of entering university, and if you are a future student reading this, it may be one of your chief worries. On my first day moving into my dorm, a few days prior to the start of the term, I spent the whole day retreating in my room, too scared to venture out and introduce myself to others. However, sitting here today, I can assertively say I’ve made some of the most remarkable friends I’ve ever known, here at this university and in this program. I’ve built a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in casual conversations with individuals in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I’ve learned that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be ample ice-breaker events and opportunities to help you interact with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With such a diverse group of people across the program and university, you are sure to connect with those who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the volume and complexity of the coursework. There was indeed a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even steeper rise from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few things aided me in navigating that feeling, one being the reminder that everyone is experiencing the same challenges. If you don’t grasp something, I can almost assure you that others do not either. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They wish for you to succeed and recognize that students face difficulties. They show empathy towards us and keep open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking leaps previously – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to utilize the assistance available. You can never have too much!
All in all, this year has taught me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated by the various support options provided by faculty and peers. It has demonstrated to me that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment alongside pressures such as exams and deadlines.
