By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, back in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, trepidation, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Embracing the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was prepared for. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current status?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This often ranks as one of the most anxiety-inducing elements of entering university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be among your foremost concerns. On my first day moving into my accommodation, just a few days prior to the semester’s start, I spent the entire day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and introduce myself to others. Presently, I can assert with confidence that I’ve forged some of the strongest friendships I’ve ever experienced, right here at this university in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with engaging in light conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking opportunities and events will assist you in connecting with others. I also recognized that if you can choose one thing, let it be to be yourself. With such a diverse array of individuals across the program and the university, you are sure to meet people like you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was unquestionably a leap from A-levels, and in many respects, an even greater leap between the first and second terms. Being thrust into such a setting isn’t always conducive to one’s confidence; you might observe others studying and feel lacking. A few factors helped me navigate that sensation, one of which was the reminder that everyone is in a similar situation. If you don’t comprehend something, I can almost assure you that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may well be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Seek help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely wish for your success and recognize that students face challenges. They show empathy towards students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the academic year regarding our concerns. I didn’t make full use of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had sooner. I mentioned taking leaps before – I made one at the year’s commencement by stepping into the role of a well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous methods to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s unequivocally one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this element of university life is to leverage the assistance available to you. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It’s shown me that I’m never alone and how to enjoy life even amidst stressors such as exams and deadlines.
