By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what lessons have I gathered this year, and where do I find myself now?

One of the initial and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This aspect is often one of the most daunting when starting university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may weigh heavily on your mind. On my first day moving into my residence, just days prior to the term’s commencement, I spent the whole day in my room, too afraid to venture out and introduce myself. Now, I can proudly state that I’ve made some of the best friends here at university and within my program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what have I discovered? I learned that taking a bold step at the start of the year is essential. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you engage with others. I also discovered that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse crowd across the program and university, you’re sure to find like-minded individuals.

Another obstacle was the workload and complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a notable increase from A-levels, and in some instances, an even larger jump from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others engrossed in their studies and feel inferior. A few strategies aided me through this, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experiences. If something is unclear to you, I can nearly assure you that others are grappling with it as well. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This could be the most vital lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out for support from peers and faculty!

This leads me to my next observation. The staff in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to excel and comprehend the challenges faced by students. They relate to students and maintain open lines of communication throughout the year regarding our worries. I didn’t really utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks – I embraced one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to engage with faculty, and it’s among the most beneficial actions you can take for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to capitalize on the assistance provided. You can never have too much of it!

In summary, this year has revealed that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be alleviated with the support resources available from faculty and peers. It has shown me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
