Ten months prior, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about the future as I embarked on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not an experience my formerly shy self was used to. Looking back now, I observe a year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most overwhelming hurdles was forming friendships. This often poses a significant worry for newcomers at university. On my first day in my accommodation, I spent the entire time in my room, too daunted to engage with anyone. Today, I can proudly state that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all stemming from initiating brief conversations with those in comparable circumstances. I realized that it’s best to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you’re not prepared, fear not! There are numerous ice-breaking events designed to help you engage with others. Additionally, be true to yourself. With such a diverse crowd, you are sure to encounter individuals like you.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the complexity of the content. There was a clear increase in difficulty from A-levels, and an even larger leap from the first to the second term. This can impact your self-esteem, especially when you start comparing yourself to peers. Keep in mind, everyone is facing the same circumstances. If something isn’t clear to you, it’s likely that others are struggling too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This is essential during the first year. Reach out to both fellow students and staff!

The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges students encounter. They keep communication lines open throughout the year regarding any difficulties. I didn’t utilize the pastoral support until later on, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I took the initiative to become a well-being representative for my year, which allowed me to connect with faculty, a significant opportunity. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s one of the most beneficial actions you can take for your own well-being. Don’t hesitate to make use of the support provided. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety about university are often baseless and can be eased with the support available from faculty and fellow students. I’ve come to realize I am never alone and have learned to find joy even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
