Ten months prior, back in October 2022, I experienced a whirlwind of anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a fresh first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my formerly bashful and quiet self was used to. Looking back now, I perceive a year abundant in personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment. So, what insights did this past year provide, and what is my current standing?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was establishing friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more fearsome elements of commencing university, and if you happen to be a prospective student perusing this, it may be one of your foremost worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, merely days before classes started, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and engage with others. However, today, I can assert with confidence that I’ve developed some of the most remarkable friendships here at this university and course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar predicaments. So, what did I take away from this? I learned that taking a chance at the start of the year is invariably advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be abundant ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with your peers. I also realized that being authentic is essential. With the multitude of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you’re likely to encounter people who resonate with you.
An additional challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undoubtedly a noticeable rise from A-levels, and in certain respects, an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you may observe others studying and feel inferior. What aided me during this time was the realization that everyone is navigating the same journey. If you struggle to grasp a concept, I can almost assure you that others are in the same position. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may prove to be the most vital skill to hone in your first year. Reach out for support from your classmates and the faculty!
This leads me to my next observation. The staff within the Materials department are remarkable. They are eager for you to thrive and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show understanding and maintain regular communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one by becoming a year well-being representative. This position allowed me to familiarize myself with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with the faculty, and it’s one of the finest actions you can take for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university is to seize the resources available to you. You can never have an excess of that!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of apprehension, both prior to and during university, are frequently baseless and can be alleviated through the varied support avenues provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never truly alone and how to derive enjoyment from my experience in spite of pressures such as exams and deadlines.
