Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was anxious, frightened, and uncertain about the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Immersing myself in such a challenging situation was not something my previously timid and reserved nature was accustomed to. Reflecting on the past year, I recognize a rich academic experience filled with personal growth, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year provided me, and what is my current status?
One of the earliest and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This certainly ranks among the more intimidating aspects of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it could be one of your biggest concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, just days before classes commenced, I spent a whole day secluded in my room out of fear of venturing out to meet others. Yet, as I sit here now, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I have ever known at this university and in this program. I have found a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was initiating some light conversation with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that it’s always worthwhile to take a risk at the beginning of the year. If you’re not feeling quite ready or at ease, that’s perfectly fine! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and opportunities that will help you connect with others. I also realized that if you can embody one thing, be authentically you. There are countless unique individuals throughout the course and university; you are certain to meet those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle I needed to overcome was the intensity of the workload and the difficulty of the material. There was indeed a significant escalation from A-levels, and in certain aspects, an even greater leap from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe peers studying and feel inadequate. A few insights helped me manage that sensation, one being the understanding that everyone is experiencing similar struggles. If you’re confused about something, I can nearly assure you that at least a handful of others are also grappling with it. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn during your first year. Reach out for help from both your fellow students and the faculty!
This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are fantastic. They genuinely wish for you to succeed and are aware that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t truly take advantage of the pastoral support until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had accessed it earlier. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I took a significant step at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This role allowed me to build relationships with faculty members, which is an incredibly beneficial thing to do. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the greatest actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary lesson from this aspect of university life is to fully utilize the assistance available to you. You can never have too much support!
In general terms, this year has enlightened me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unwarranted and can be alleviated through the extensive support options provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated, and it has shown me how to relish the experience amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
