Authored by Dawson La, Master’s in Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was on the brink of commencing my studies in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Entering the unknown was not something my previously introverted and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating challenges was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it might be a major worry for you. On the first day of moving into my dormitory, a few days ahead of classes starting, I spent the entire day in my room, too afraid to go out and meet others. However, today I can proudly say I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever known here at university and in my degree program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, all initiated through casual conversations with those in similar situations. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a chance at the start of the year is always advantageous. If you’re not entirely prepared or comfortable, don’t be concerned! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in meeting new people. I also found that being authentic is vital. With such a variety of individuals across the course and the university, you are sure to encounter those who click with you.

Another hurdle was the workload and the complexity of the material. There was certainly an increase from A-levels, and in certain aspects, a greater jump from the first term to the second. Being placed in such an environment can be challenging for your confidence; you might see your peers studying and feel inferior. Several factors supported me during this time, one being the reminder that everyone is in the same situation. If something is unclear to you, it’s almost guaranteed that others are in the same boat. So, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This could be the most important skill you cultivate in your first year. Reach out for help from your classmates and faculty!

This brings me to my next topic. The staff in the Materials department are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain open lines of communication regarding our concerns throughout the year. I didn’t completely take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. Speaking of taking leaps – I made one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for your own well-being! My primary takeaway is to utilize the assistance that is available. You can never have too much support!

In summary, this year has demonstrated to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often baseless and can be mitigated through the various support systems provided by staff and fellow students. It has revealed to me that I’m never alone and has taught me how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
