Almost a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious, fearful, and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously timid and introverted self was used to. Reflecting back, I recognize an academic year brimming with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what lessons has this year imparted, and where do I stand now?
One of the initial and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a prospective student, it may be one of your top concerns. On my first day moving into my residence, a few days prior to the start of term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room because I felt too overwhelmed to venture out and greet people. Looking back now, I can state with confidence that I’ve formed some of the best friendships during my time at this university and in this program. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and all it took was engaging in small conversations with others in the same situation. So, what have I learned? I discovered that it’s always beneficial to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities and events designed to help you connect with others. I also found that if you should embody anything, let it be your true self. There are a multitude of unique individuals across the program and university; you are sure to meet those who resonate with you.
Another challenge I faced was the volume of work and the difficulty of the content. There was certainly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being placed in such a challenging environment isn’t always easy for your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few strategies aided me during that time, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that there are several others grappling with the same confusion. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the paramount lesson to embrace in your first year. Reach out to your classmates and the faculty for support!
This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They are invested in your success and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had engaged with it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly valuable. There are numerous opportunities to familiarize yourself with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for your own benefit! My main takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the assistance being offered. You can never have too much help!
Overall, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be mitigated through the various support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never alone, and it has shown me how to find joy amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
