Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Plunging into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current situation?

One of the earliest and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is typically a significant concern for new college students. On my first day at my accommodation, before classes commenced, I spent the entire day in my room, too scared to approach new people. Now, I can proudly say that I’ve formed some of the best friendships at university. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial by simply starting conversations with others who were in similar situations. So, what’s the takeaway? Taking a chance at the beginning of the year is crucial. If you’re not ready, don’t fret! There are plenty of ice-breakers and events designed to facilitate connections with others. Additionally, be authentic. With such a diverse crowd, you’re sure to meet individuals like yourself.

Another obstacle was the volume of work and the difficulty of the content. There was a clear leap from A-levels, and an even greater one from the first to the second term. This setting can undermine your confidence; you might feel insufficient when compared to others. Keep in mind, everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re confused about a topic, chances are others are too. Therefore, seeking help is crucial during your first year. Reach out to fellow students and faculty!

On the topic of faculty, the team in Materials is exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and are aware of the challenges students face. They keep communication open regarding our issues. I didn’t utilize pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I took a step forward by becoming a year well-being representative, which enabled me to connect with staff—an invaluable experience. There are numerous ways to get acquainted with faculty, and it’s one of the best choices you can make for your own benefit! My key takeaway is to make the most of the support available. There’s always room for more help!

This year has fundamentally shown me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often baseless and can be lessened with the support of staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I’m never truly alone, and I’ve discovered how to find enjoyment despite stresses like exams and deadlines.
