Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Ten months back, in October 2022, I felt anxious and uncertain about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, hurdles, and plenty of fun! But what have I discovered, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating obstacles was forging friendships. This can be one of the most nerve-wracking parts of beginning university, and if you’re a potential student, it might be a significant worry. On my initial day settling into my accommodation, a few days prior to the start of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself. Now, I can firmly state that I’ve formed some of the best friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with others in similar situations. So, what did I realize? I realized that taking a chance at the start of the year is essential. If you’re not prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking activities to assist you in connecting with your peers. I also discovered that being authentic is crucial. With so many varied individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find people who connect with you.

An additional challenge was the workload and complexity of the material. There was a marked increase from A-levels, and an even greater leap from the first to the second term. Being in such an environment can test your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. What aided me was remembering that everyone is navigating the same path. If you’re puzzled by something, others probably are too. So, seek assistance. This may be the most vital lesson in the first year. Reach out to peers and faculty!

This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and understand the challenges that students encounter. They are sympathetic and maintain ongoing communication with us regarding our issues. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. Initially, I decided to take a leap by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with faculty, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to familiarize yourself with staff, and it’s one of the best actions you can take for your own benefit! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the support available. You can never have an excess of it!

All in all, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both before and during university, are often baseless and can be alleviated through the support provided by staff and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never alone and how to find enjoyment even amid stressors such as exams and deadlines.
