Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding my future. I was on the verge of commencing my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not a scenario my previously timid and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I acknowledge a year filled with personal development, challenges, and immense enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and how do I currently perceive my position?
One of the primary and most intimidating challenges I encountered was forging friendships. This certainly ranks among the more fearsome elements of commencing university, and if you are reading this as an impending student, it may be one of your greatest worries. On my first day settling into my accommodation, a few days ahead of the term, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can assert with confidence that I have made some of the finest friends I’ve ever had here at this university and in this program. I have built a second family at Imperial, and all it took was some light conversation with individuals in like circumstances. So, what did I take away from this? I discovered that it’s always wise to take a chance at the beginning of the year. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, there’s no need for concern! There will be ample ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be yourself. With a multitude of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to encounter people who resonate with you.
Another challenge was the workload and the complexity of the content. There was undoubtedly a leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even larger transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can sometimes be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few factors assisted me through that period, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar experiences. If there’s something you don’t grasp, I can nearly assure you that there are others who are also struggling. Thus, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may very well be the most crucial lesson to grasp during the first year. Seek help from your peers and the faculty!
This brings me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to thrive and recognize that students face difficulties. They empathize with students and maintain ongoing communication with us throughout the year regarding our challenges. I didn’t effectively utilize the pastoral support until the year’s conclusion, but I wish I had done so earlier. I spoke about taking chances at the outset; I did take one by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty members, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to interact with staff, and it is undoubtedly one of the best things you can do for yourself! My key takeaway from this dimension of university life is to capitalize on the assistance available to you. You can never receive too much!
In summary, this year has enlightened me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are nearly always unfounded and can be eased with the various support options provided by faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I am never isolated and how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
