Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)
Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with nerves, fears, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously bashful and reserved self was used to. Looking back now, I see a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?
One of the first and most intimidating trials was forming friendships. This is often one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and for any prospective student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, just prior to the semester starting, I spent the entire day concealed in my room, too daunted to go out and mingle. Today, I can assert that I’ve forged some of the finest friendships I’ve ever had at this university and in this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in comparable situations. What did I take away from this? It’s crucial to take risks at the start of the academic year. If you aren’t prepared or comfortable, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaking chances and events designed to help you meet others. I also discovered that authenticity is vital. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another hurdle was the volume of work and the complexity of the material. There was a noticeable leap from A-levels, and in some ways, an even more significant shift from the first term to the second. Being in such an atmosphere can challenge your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inadequate. A few aspects aided me in navigating this, one being the reminder that everyone is in similar circumstances. If you don’t grasp something, I can nearly assure you that others don’t either. So, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson of the first year. Seek guidance from fellow students and staff!
This leads me to my next observation. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They are invested in your success and recognize that students face challenges. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication concerning our issues. I didn’t utilize pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had started earlier. I spoke of taking risks – I embraced one at the beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never have too much!
All in all, this year has shown me that anxious feelings, both prior to and during university, are frequently misplaced and can be alleviated with the support services provided by staff and fellow students. I’ve learned that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment despite challenges such as exams and deadlines.
