Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was about to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously timid and quiet self was used to. Looking back, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a great deal of enjoyment! So, what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This is certainly one of the more daunting parts of beginning university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your main worries. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the commencement of the term, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, too scared to go out and meet others. However, today I can assertively say that I’ve fostered some of the best friendships I’ve ever known, both at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with others in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always a wise move. If you’re not feeling ready or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous ice-breaker opportunities and events designed to help you link up with others. I also learned that if you can embody one thing, be authentic. With such a diverse array of people throughout the course and university, you are sure to connect with those who share your values.

A further challenge was the demands of the coursework and the difficulty of the material. There was a notable increase in expectations compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can be daunting for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few elements helped me navigate that feeling, one being the reassurance that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If something is unclear, I can almost guarantee that there are others in the same situation. Therefore, seek assistance. This might be the most crucial lesson to grasp in your first year. Reach out to your fellow students and the faculty!

This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to succeed and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show compassion towards us and keep up constant communication throughout the year concerning our challenges. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had taken advantage of it sooner. I mentioned taking leaps earlier – I made one at the year’s start by becoming a year well-being representative. This role allowed me to connect with the faculty, which is immensely beneficial. There are numerous ways to engage with the staff, and it’s undoubtedly one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much!

In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety, both before and during university, are frequently unfounded and can be mitigated through the diverse support options provided by staff and peers. It has taught me that I’m never isolated and how to find joy even amidst pressures such as exams and deadlines.
