Around ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was on the verge of starting my academic journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unfamiliar wasn’t something my previously timid and reserved nature was used to. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, obstacles, and a lot of enjoyable moments! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current position?
One of the primary and most intimidating hurdles was forming friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of commencing university, and if you’re an aspiring student reading this, it may be a significant worry for you. On my first day settling into my residence, a few days ahead of the term starting, I spent the entire day hiding in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. However, today, I can assert that I’ve established some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both at this university and within my course. I have discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with light conversation with individuals in similar situations. So, what insight did I gain? I learned that taking a leap at the beginning of the year is always advisable. If you’re not entirely ready or at ease, fret not! There will be plenty of ice-breaker chances and events designed to assist you in connecting with others. I also discovered that if you can be anything, be genuine. With such a diverse group of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to find those who resonate with you.
Another obstacle was juggling the workload and the complexity of the material. There was undeniably a significant shift from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more substantial transition from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can shake your self-assurance; you may observe others studying and feel inadequate. Several factors aided me in overcoming that sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same struggles. If something is unclear, I can almost assure you that others are grappling with it too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the single most crucial skill to cultivate in your first year. Reach out to your peers and the staff!
This brings me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are remarkable. They genuinely wish for your success and comprehend the challenges students encounter. They empathize with us and maintain ongoing communication throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully leverage the pastoral support until the year’s end, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps—I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the staff members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are numerous ways to connect with faculty, and it’s one of the best decisions you can make for yourself! My primary takeaway from this facet of university life is to make the most of the assistance available. You can never have too much support!
In summary, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are often unjustified and can be alleviated with the diverse support resources provided by faculty and fellow students. It’s taught me that I am never alone and how to find joy despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
