Nearly a year ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what lay ahead. I was poised to embark on my journey in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was not something my previously shy and introverted self was prepared for. Looking back, I realize I’ve experienced a year full of personal development, obstacles, and a considerable amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gained this year, and what is my current standing?

One of the initial and most intimidating obstacles I encountered was forming friendships. This is undoubtedly one of the most daunting parts of starting university, and if you’re reading this as a future student, it may be one of your significant concerns. On my first day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to the semester beginning, I spent the entire day sequestered in my room, far too apprehensive to step out and introduce myself to anyone. However, sitting here today, I can proudly say that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I’ve ever had, both here at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it merely required engaging in light conversation with others facing similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking a risk at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, it’s okay! There will be numerous ice-breaker chances and events to facilitate connections with fellow students. I also realized that if you can be anything, be your authentic self. With such a diverse range of individuals across the course and university, you’re sure to find others who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume and complexity of the coursework. There was indeed a significant leap from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater transition from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such an environment can be challenging for your self-esteem; you might observe others studying and feel inferior. A few strategies helped me navigate that sensation, one being the reassurance that everyone is navigating the same experience. If you’re struggling to grasp a concept, I can nearly assure you that others are as well. Hence, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to take away from the first year. Don’t hesitate to ask for help from your classmates and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials is remarkable. They genuinely desire for you to thrive and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They show compassion towards students and keep in active touch throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had taken advantage of it earlier. I mentioned embracing opportunities before; I took one at the beginning of the year by becoming a year well-being representative. This role enabled me to connect with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are many opportunities to interact with staff, and it’s definitely one of the best actions you can take for yourself! My key takeaway from this aspect of university life is to capitalize on the support provided. You can never have too much!

In a broader sense, this year has taught me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and during university, are usually baseless and can be eased with the numerous support resources available from faculty and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never solitary, and it has taught me how to find enjoyment amidst stressors like exams and deadlines.
