Ten months prior, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty regarding the future. I was about to commence my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Venturing into the unfamiliar was something my previously timid and reserved self had not encountered before. Looking back now, I recognize a year abundant with personal development, obstacles, and immense enjoyment! But what insights have I gained, and what is my current state?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was the quest for friendships. This aspect of commencing university can indeed be one of the most daunting, and for those prospective students reading this, it might weigh heavily on your mind. On my inaugural day moving into my residence, just days before the semester began, I spent the whole day secluded in my room, too daunted to step out and meet others. Yet, sitting here today, I can assertively say I’ve formed some of the greatest friendships at this university and in this program. I’ve discovered a second family here at Imperial, and it all commenced with casual conversations with peers facing similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I learned that taking the initiative at the beginning of the year is always advantageous. If you don’t feel prepared or at ease, don’t fret! There will be numerous opportunities for ice-breaking activities and events to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that if you can be anything, be true to yourself. With a multitude of diverse individuals throughout the course and university, you are sure to discover those who vibe with you.

Another hurdle was the academic load and the complexity of the subject matter. There was certainly a noticeable increase from A-levels, and in some respects, an even greater jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can be taxing on your confidence; you may observe others studying and feel like you’re falling short. A few strategies assisted me in overcoming that sensation, one being the acknowledgment that everyone is navigating similar challenges. If you’re struggling to comprehend something, I can almost assure you that there are others who are equally puzzled. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek assistance. This might be the most vital lesson to internalize during your first year. Reach out to your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my subsequent point. The faculty in Materials are exceptional. They genuinely want you to flourish and recognize that students encounter difficulties. They relate to students and keep open lines of communication with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care until the latter part of the year, but I wish I had done so earlier. I previously mentioned taking chances – I did take one at the year’s outset by becoming a well-being representative for my year. This position enabled me to familiarize myself with the faculty members, which is incredibly beneficial. There are various ways to connect with faculty, and it’s unquestionably one of the finest decisions you can make for yourself! My primary lesson from this facet of university life is to seize the opportunities for help that are presented to you. You can never have too much support!

In sum, this year has shown me that feelings of nervousness, both prior to and throughout university, are often baseless and can be mitigated with the array of support available from faculty and fellow students. It has taught me that I’m never truly alone, and it has revealed how to relish the experience despite pressures such as exams and deadlines.
