Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was filled with apprehension and uncertainty about the future. I was embarking on my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a first-year student. Venturing into the unknown was not something my previously reserved self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year brimming with personal development, challenges, and enjoyable experiences! But what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the first and most intimidating hurdles was forging friendships. This aspect often poses the greatest challenge when starting university, and if you are an incoming student, it may be a significant worry. On my initial day moving into my residence, just days before the beginning of classes, I spent the whole day in my room, feeling too daunted to venture out and meet others. Today, however, I can assert with confidence that I’ve formed some of the closest friendships here at university and within my course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all began with casual conversations with individuals in similar positions. So, what lesson did I learn? It’s advisable to take a risk at the start of the year. If you aren’t ready or feel uncomfortable, don’t fret! Numerous ice-breaking events are available to assist you in connecting with others. I also realized that authenticity is crucial. With such a wide array of people throughout the course and university, you’re sure to meet those who share your interests.

An additional challenge was the intensity of the workload and the complexity of the material. There was a significant increase from A-levels, and an even larger jump from the first term to the second. Being in such an environment can challenge your confidence; you might feel inadequate in comparison to others. Several factors aided me through this, one being the reminder that everyone shares the same experience. If you find something confusing, others likely do too. Therefore, don’t hesitate to seek help. This might be the most essential lesson during the first year. Seek support from classmates and faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The staff in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely want you to excel and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and maintain consistent communication with us throughout the year. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until the end of the year, but I wish I had utilized it earlier. I mentioned taking risks before – I took one by becoming a well-being representative for the year. This role enabled me to connect with the staff, which is invaluable. There are numerous ways to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary lesson is to capitalize on the assistance available. You can never receive too much!

All in all, this year has shown me that feelings of anxiety regarding university are often unfounded and can be alleviated with the support accessible from staff and fellow students. I’ve come to realize that I am never alone and how to find enjoyment even amidst the pressures of exams and deadlines.
