Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

Approximately ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about my future. I was on the verge of starting my degree in Materials Science and Engineering as a freshman. Diving into the unknown was not something my previously shy and introverted self was familiar with. Looking back now, I recognize a year filled with personal development, challenges, and plenty of enjoyment! But what lessons did this year impart, and where do I stand today?

One of the first, and most intimidating, obstacles was forging friendships. This is frequently one of the most daunting elements of beginning university, and if you’re an incoming student, it may be your greatest worry. On my initial day of moving into my residence, a few days prior to classes commencing, I spent the whole day sequestered in my room, too daunted to venture out and interact with others. Today, however, I can assert that I’ve formed some of the finest friendships at this university and within this course. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all kicked off with casual conversations with individuals in similar circumstances. So, what did I discover? I realized that it’s best to make a bold move at the onset of the year. If you don’t feel entirely prepared or at ease, fret not! There will be abundant ice-breaking chances and events to facilitate connections with others. I also came to understand that if you can embody one thing, be genuine. With such a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you’re sure to encounter those who resonate with you.

Another challenge was the volume of work and complexity of the material. There was certainly a rise in difficulty from A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant jump from the first term to the second. Being immersed in such an environment can shake your confidence; you might observe others studying and feel less capable. A few things assisted me in navigating this sensation, one being the reminder that everyone shares similar struggles. If you’re puzzled by something, I can almost assure you there are others who are also confused. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This may be the most crucial lesson to learn in your first year. Seek out support from your peers and the faculty!

This leads me to my next point. The faculty in Materials are outstanding. They genuinely desire for you to excel and understand the challenges students encounter. They show empathy and consistently communicate with us throughout the year regarding our concerns. I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral support until later in the year, but I wish I had embraced it sooner. I mentioned earlier about taking leaps – I made one at the year’s beginning by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to connect with the faculty, which is tremendously beneficial. There are numerous avenues to engage with staff, and it’s one of the best things you can do for yourself! My primary takeaway from this aspect of university life is to seize the help available. You can never have too much!

In conclusion, this year has revealed to me that feelings of anxiety, both prior to and during university, are often unwarranted and can be mitigated by the various support resources provided by staff and fellow students. It has shown me that I am never alone and taught me how to balance enjoyment alongside pressures like exams and deadlines.
