**Reflections on My Initial Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*By Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Ten months ago, in October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, fear, and uncertainty about what was to come as I readied myself to embark on my degree in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) as a freshman. Daring to step into the unknown was not a habit of my previously timid and reserved nature. Reflecting on this past year, I recognize it as a period of growth, challenges, and abundant enjoyment. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I find myself today?
### Conquering the Anxiety of Forming Friendships
One of the most daunting challenges I encountered at the onset of university was establishing friendships. For numerous prospective students, this stands as one of the foremost worries, and I was no different. On my first day settling into my accommodation, I spent the entirety of the day cloistered in my room, too anxious to venture out and introduce myself to my peers. Fast forward to today, and I can assertively declare that I’ve formed some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had.
Here at Imperial and within my program, I’ve discovered a second family. All it required was stepping beyond my comfort zone and initiating brief conversations with individuals who were experiencing similar circumstances. What did I take away from this? Taking that initial leap at the beginning of the year is invariably worthwhile. If you’re not prepared or don’t feel at ease, there’s no need for concern—an abundance of ice-breaker activities and opportunities to connect with others exists. Most crucially, I realized that being authentic is essential. With such a varied community at Imperial, you’re certain to encounter individuals who resonate with your interests and values.
### Navigating the Academic Shift
Another major obstacle was adapting to the workload and the complexity of the course materials. The transition from A-levels to university was significant, and the leap from the first term to the second term felt even more dramatic. Being in such a rigorous academic environment can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when you observe others studying and feel as if you’re lagging behind.
What supported me during this period was the epiphany that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you don’t grasp a concept, it’s likely others are having difficulty as well. The most crucial lesson I absorbed in my first year was the importance of asking for assistance. Whether it’s from your classmates or the faculty, seeking help is invaluable.
### Exceptional Staff and Support Services
Regarding staff, I cannot stress enough how incredible the Materials department personnel are. They genuinely care about student success and are understanding of the hurdles we encounter. Throughout the year, they kept lines of communication open and offered consistent support.
While I didn’t fully take advantage of the pastoral care until the year’s end, I wish I had sought it sooner. At the year’s outset, I made a significant move by becoming a year well-being representative. This position enabled me to cultivate connections with staff members, which turned out to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous pathways to connect with staff, and doing so can profoundly influence your university journey. My primary takeaway here is to leverage the support that’s available—there’s no such thing as too much help!
### Insights Gained and Future Aspirations
In contemplating my first year, I’ve discovered that the anxiety I experienced before commencing university—and even throughout the year—was frequently unwarranted. With the extensive range of support options from both staff and fellow students, I was never genuinely alone. This year has instructed me in balancing the stress stemming from exams and deadlines with moments of joy and pleasure.
As I advance, I feel increasingly assured and equipped for the challenges that lie ahead, with the knowledge that I possess a robust support network and the resources to flourish.
