**Insights from My Inaugural Year in Materials Science and Engineering**
*Authored by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)*
Nearly ten months ago, in October 2022, I found myself overwhelmed with anxiety, apprehension, and uncertainty regarding what was to come. I was on the verge of commencing my adventure as a first-year student in [Materials Science and Engineering](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/study/courses/undergraduate/materials-science-engineering-meng/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=internal&utm_campaign=mra-blogs&utm_content=link) at Imperial College London. As a person who has always been quite introverted, diving into new experiences was not within my comfort zone. Reflecting on the past year, I can now recognize an academic year rich in personal development, obstacles, and a significant amount of enjoyment! But what insights have I gathered from this journey, and what is my current position?
One of the foremost and most stressful obstacles I encountered was the task of forming friendships. This is undeniably one of the most intimidating elements of initiating university life, and if you’re a future student perusing this, it may be a primary concern for you. On my first day settling into my accommodation, just prior to the beginning of term, I spent the whole day cloistered in my room, too daunted to venture out and meet others. Fast forward to now, and I can proudly assert that I’ve forged some of the best friendships I have ever experienced. I’ve discovered a second family at Imperial, and it all initiated from casual conversations with individuals who were in a similar situation.
So, what insights did I gain? I recognized that it’s always beneficial to take that initial step at the year’s commencement. If you feel unprepared or uneasy, fret not! There will be numerous ice-breaking events and chances to socialize. Most crucially, I learned that the greatest thing you can be is your authentic self. With a diverse array of individuals throughout the course and university, you are certain to meet others who resonate with your interests and values.
Another major challenge was navigating the coursework and the complexity of the material. There was definitely a discernible increase in difficulty compared to A-levels, and in some respects, an even more significant escalation from the first term to the second. Being thrust into such a setting can occasionally undermine your confidence, especially when observing others studying and feeling like you’re lagging behind. One factor that assisted me was the reassurance that everyone is facing similar challenges. If you’re struggling with a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. Therefore, don’t hesitate to ask for assistance. This is arguably the most crucial lesson I gleaned in my first year—never shy away from reaching out to your peers or faculty for support!
On the topic of faculty, I must express that the professors in the Materials department are remarkable. They genuinely aspire for you to thrive and comprehend the hurdles students encounter. They ensure ongoing communication with us throughout the year, tending to any issues we might experience. I didn’t fully tap into the available pastoral support until late in the year, and I wish I had done it sooner. At the beginning of the year, I took a bold step by becoming a year well-being representative, which offered me the chance to engage with the faculty more closely. This experience proved to be immensely beneficial. There are numerous avenues to connect with faculty, and leveraging these resources is one of the best things you can do for your own well-being! My primary lesson here is to seize the support that is offered. You can never receive too much help!
In conclusion, this year has enlightened me to the realization that the anxiety I felt prior to and during university was frequently unwarranted, and there are abundant support systems in place to assist you throughout the process. I’ve come to understand that I’m never genuinely alone, and I’ve learned how to strike a balance between enjoying life and managing the demands of examinations and deadlines.
