Written by Dawson La, Materials Science and Engineering (MEng)

In October 2022, I was overwhelmed with anxiety, uncertainty, and a touch of fear as I geared up to embark on my journey at Imperial College London. Beginning my first year in the Materials Science and Engineering program felt akin to plunging into the deep end—something that my previously timid and reserved self was not accustomed to. Reflecting on the past academic year, I recognize it as a period of personal development, challenges, and remarkable experiences. So, what insights have I gained, and where do I stand now?

One of the primary hurdles I encountered early on was forming friendships. For many newcomers, this can be one of the most daunting aspects of initiating university life. I recall spending my entire first day in my room, too anxious to venture out and meet others in my accommodation. However, fast forward to now, and I can confidently say that I’ve forged some of the most meaningful friendships I’ve ever had—individuals who resemble a second family. What contributed to this? Initiating small conversations with others who were equally new and apprehensive. My key takeaway? Make that initial move. Even if you feel unprepared, there are numerous ice-breakers and social gatherings designed to facilitate connections. And above all, be yourself. With such a diverse student population, you’re sure to meet individuals who share your passions and principles.

Academically, transitioning from A-levels to university-level coursework presented another significant challenge. The volume and complexity of the material escalated considerably, especially between the first and second terms. It’s natural to feel inundated or to compare yourself to peers who appear to be managing better. Yet, one of the most important lessons I learned was that everyone is experiencing similar challenges. If you find yourself struggling to grasp a concept, it’s likely that others are as well. Don’t shy away from seeking assistance—whether from fellow students or faculty. Cultivating the ability to request help is one of the most crucial skills you can nurture in your first year.

On the topic of support, the staff in the Materials department have been exceptional. They genuinely prioritize student wellbeing and are consistently receptive to feedback and communication. Although I didn’t fully utilize the pastoral support until later in the year, I wish I had sought help sooner. Early on, I took the initiative to become a year wellbeing representative, which allowed me to collaborate closely with staff and gain a deeper understanding of the support systems available. Establishing connections with faculty members has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my university journey, and I strongly encourage getting involved in any capacity you can.

Overall, this year has shown me that the apprehension I experienced before and during the start of university was entirely normal—and often unmerited. With the extensive support offered by both staff and fellow students, I’ve realized that I’m never truly isolated. Most significantly, I’ve learned how to navigate the demands of academic life while enjoying moments of connection and happiness.
